China builds a new world order

In his new article for Sky News columnist Katie Stallard ponders what might have implications China's rise on the international stage.

The author  notes  that "after leading China back into the world" in the 80s, Deng Xiaoping began to encourage a foreign policy that translates roughly as "hide your light, wait for your moment."

It was a period of reform and opening: China was weak, poor and had a lot of ground to recover. Therefore, according to the author, it made sense to "keep a low profile on the international scene".

"Xi Jinping seems to have left to hide and wait" said Stallard.

When Hu entered the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to promote his new initiative of  the Silk Road  in the framework of the International Forum held on 14 and 15 May, "there was nothing apologetic or referential in their behavior" .

Instead, Xi Jinping seems to have decided that now is the time when China "stand firm and show itself, though insisting that his power poses no threat and can be a force for good in the world" .

Thus, according to the author, the leader of the Asian giant must convince regional neighbors even those involved in disputes territoriales- "they have nothing to fear and everything to gain from the rise of China".

In addition, Beijing is obliged to ensure that Washington does not plan to replace him in "Treetop", but seeks "peaceful coexistence". Therefore, the president usually characterizes the resurgence of the country in terms reassuring and non - threatening.

According to Stallard, when Xi Jinping speaks of foreign policy, he likes to mention "a new type of international relations" with "mutual respect" and "mutually beneficial cooperation".

"In other words, China no longer wants to play the second role in an international order led by the US and wants a new order in which you treat her as an equal, and undertakes to treat others the same way , " he says the author.

By giving their views on the new economic belt of the Silk Road, the Chinese leader chose the example of Admiral of the fifteenth century, Zheng He, whom he described as "a pioneer, not a conqueror, who would be remembered as a friendly envoy ".

In this scenario, Stallard continued, "Admiral Xi is sailing with his treasure to share it along the Silk Road in the form of new investments in infrastructure."

However, according to the author, no leader of the G7, with the exception of Italy, attended the Beijing Summit.

The journalist recalled that in 2014 China Xi Jinping compared with a "sleeping lion, that will shake the world when you wake up."

"Today the lion is awake, but it is peaceful, pleasant and civilized"
