In times of panic and to something unknown, no one knows how they will react. The heroic gesture saved the Noorullah Esaakhel Thursday, August 18 more than a dozen lives in Las Ramblas in Barcelona.


Noorullah is 29 and is Afghan. Restaurant works as a promoter of Istanbul King Street Hospital, perpendicular to Las Ramblas.


As each day at 16:47 hours, Noorullah was on the corner of two streets with a menu in hand ready to convince tourists and locals to take them to their restaurant to eat.


"I heard too much noise, for which there normally, and looked to see what happened.

Now is the time to talk about climate change and all other injustices - from making systemic detention and interrogation based on racial profiling to economically transform austerity disasters like  Harvey  in human catastrophes.

Seek media coverage of Hurricane  Harvey  and flooding in Houston, and hear about how this kind of rain is unprecedented. You will hear about how no one saw it coming, so no one could prepare properly.

What you hear very little about why these historically unprecedented weather events occur so regularly, to say historic and became a weather cliché. In other words, you do not hear talk much, if anything, about climate change.

This, they say, is because it seeks not to politicize a human tragedy that is still under development, which is understandable, but here's the thing: every time we make as a weather event comes from nowhere, like some action god no one could predict, reporters take an extremely political decision. It is determined not to hurt feelings and avoid controversy at the expense of the truth, however difficult it may be. Because the truth is that these events were predicted long ago by climate scientists. Increasingly warm oceans create more powerful storms. Increasingly high levels of the oceans mean that those storms come to places that were not reached. The increasingly warmer temperatures cause increasing rainfall extremes:

We saw Trump used as a cover to Hurricane  Harvey  to achieve the highly controversial pardon of Joe Arpaio and further militarization of US police forces. This is especially ominous movements in the context of that posts migration monitoring are still operating with flooded roads (a serious disincentive for migrants evacuate) and in the context of municipal officials talking about applying penalties maximum looters (it is worth remembering that after  Katrina , several African - American residents were shot by police in the middle of this kind of rhetoric).

In short, the right not waste time to exploit  Harvey  and no other disaster like this to spread ruinous and false solutions, such as military police, more oil and gas infrastructure and privatized systems. This means that people informed and that matters is the moral imperative of naming the true roots of this crisis -connect the dots between climate pollution, systemic racism, reduced social services funds and excess funds for police. We also need to seize the moment to propose inter - sectoral solutions that dramatically reduce emissions while we struggle against all forms of inequality and injustice (something we have tried to raise in  The Leap  and groups like the  Alliance for Climate Justice  have driven long).

And it has to happen now same -just when the enormous human and economic costs of inaction are in full public view. If we fail, if we doubt due to a misconception of what is appropriate in a crisis, we leave the door open to ruthless actors exploit this predictable disaster for evil purposes.

It is also a hard truth that the window for these debates is getting closer. We will not have any public policy debate after passing this emergency; return to media obsessively cover Trump tweets and other intrigues. So, although it would seem indecent to be talking about the root causes while people are still trapped in their homes, this is realistically the only time we have the media attention to addressing the issue of climate change . It is worth remembering that Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris-action climate agreement that will impact on a global scale for decades received more or less two days of decent coverage. Then they returned to Russia to talk about 24 hours.

Ahora es el momento de hablar sobre el cambio climático y todas las demás injusticias sistémicas –desde realizar detenciones e interrogatorios basados en el perfil racial hasta la austeridad económica– que transforman desastres como Harvey en catástrofes humanas.

Busquen la cobertura mediática sobre el huracán Harvey y las inundaciones en Houston, y oirán acerca de cómo este tipo de lluvia no tiene precedente. Escucharán acerca de cómo nadie lo vio venir, así que nadie se podía preparar adecuadamente.

De lo que oirán muy poco es acerca de por qué estos eventos climáticos sin precedentes históricos ocurren con tanta regularidad, que decir histórico ya se volvió un cliché meteorológico. En otras palabras, no escucharás hablar mucho, si es que algo, sobre el cambio climático.

Esto, nos dicen, es porque se busca no politizar una tragedia humana que todavía está en desarrollo, lo cual es comprensible, pero aquí está el detalle: cada vez que hacemos como que un suceso meteorológico nos llega de la nada, como alguna acción de Dios que nadie pudo predecir, los reporteros toman una decisión extremadamente política. Es la determinación de no herir sentimientos y evitar la controversia, a costa de la verdad, por más difícil que sea. Porque la verdad es que estos eventos fueron predichos desde hace mucho tiempo por los científicos climáticos. Los cada vez más cálidos océanos crean tormentas más poderosas. Los cada vez más altos niveles de los océanos implican que esas tormentas entran a sitios que antes no alcanzaban. Las temperaturas cada vez más calientes ocasionan precipitaciones pluviales cada vez más extremosas: largos períodos de sequía interrumpidos por masivas tormentas de nieve o lluvia, en vez de los estables y predecibles patrones con que la mayoría de nosotros crecimos.

Los récords que se rompen año con año –ya sea de sequía, de tormentas, fuegos incontrolados o simplemente calor– ocurren porque el planeta está notablemente más caliente, más que nunca desde que comenzaron a llevarse registros. Cubrir sucesos como Harvey mientras se ignoran esos hechos, no ofrecer una plataforma para que los científicos climáticos puedan explicarlo con sencillez, mientras no se menciona la decisión del presidente Donald Trump de retirarse de los acuerdos climáticos de París, implica fracasar en el más básico deber del periodismo: ofrecer hechos importantes y contexto relevante. Deja al público con la falsa impresión de que estos desastres no tienen un origen, lo cual también implica que no se pudo haber hecho algo para prevenirlos (y que no se puede hacer algo para evitar que en el futuro sea peor).

También vale la pena señalar que la cobertura mediática de Harvey ha estado altamente politizada desde mucho antes de que la tormenta tocara tierra. Ha habido eternas conversaciones acerca de si Trump se tomaba suficientemente en serio la tormenta, largas especulaciones acerca de si este huracán será su “momento Katrina” y se han ganado puntos políticos (con justificada razón) con el hecho de que muchos republicanos votaron contra el apoyo a Sandy pero ahora sí atienden a Texas. Eso se llama hacer política de un desastre –es el tipo de política partisana que está en la zona de confort de los medios convencionales, una política que, de forma oportunista, no toma en cuenta el hecho de que anteponer los intereses de las empresas de combustibles fósiles a la necesidad de un decisivo control de la contaminación es un asunto profundamente bipartisano.

En un mundo ideal, todos deberíamos poder poner en pausa lo político hasta que la emergencia haya pasado. Luego, cuando todo el mundo estuviera a salvo, tendríamos un largo, meditativo e informado debate público acerca de las implicaciones para las políticas de la crisis que acabábamos de presenciar. ¿Qué debería implicar para el tipo de infraestructura que construimos? ¿Qué debería implicar para el tipo de energía de la que dependemos? (Una pregunta con tremendas consecuencias para la industria dominante en la región, a la que le está pegando más duro el huracán: la petrolera y la del gas). La hipervulnerabilidad a la tormenta de los enfermos, los pobres y los de la tercera edad, ¿qué nos dice acerca del tipo de redes de seguridad que tejemos, dado el escabroso futuro que ya aseguramos?.

Dado que hay miles de desplazados, podríamos incluso discutir los innegables vínculos entre la alteración climática y la migración –desde el Sahel a México– y aprovechar la oportunidad para debatir la necesidad de una política de migración que comience con la premisa de que Estados Unidos tiene una buena parte de la responsabilidad de las principales fuerzas que sacan a millones de sus hogares.

Pero no vivimos en un mundo que permite ese tipo de debate serio y mesurado. Vivimos en un mundo en el cual los poderes gobernantes se han mostrado demasiado dispuestos a explotar el desvío de atención de una crisis de gran escala; y muchos están dispuestos a usar las emergencias de vida o muerte para imponer sus políticas más regresivas, políticas que nos llevan más por el camino correctamente descrito como una forma de apartheid climático. Lo vimos después del huracán Katrina, cuando los republicanos no perdieron el tiempo y promovieron un sistema de educación completamente privatizado, debilitaron la legislación laboral y fiscal, incrementaron las perforaciones petroleras y de gas y la industria de la refinación, y abrieron las puertas a compañías mercenarias como Blackwater. Mike Pence fue un artífice clave de ese proyecto inmensamente cínico y no deberíamos esperar menos después de Harvey, ahora que él y Trump están al mando.

Ya vimos a Trump usar como tapadera al huracán Harvey para lograr el muy controvertido indulto de Joe Arpaio y una mayor militarización de las fuerzas policiales estadounidenses. Se trata de movimientos especialmente ominosos, en el contexto de que los puestos de control migratorios siguen operando aún con las carreteras inundadas (un serio desincentivo para que los migrantes evacuen), así como en el contexto de los funcionarios municipales hablando acerca de aplicar las penas máximas a los saqueadores (vale la pena recordar que después de Katrina, varios residentes afroestadounidenses fueron tiroteados por la policía en medio de este tipo de retórica).

En pocas palabras, la derecha no desperdiciará el tiempo para explotar a Harvey y ningún otro desastre como ese para diseminar ruinosas y falsas soluciones, como la policía militarizada, más infraestructura petrolera y de gas y sistemas privatizados. Lo cual significa que la gente informada y a la que le importa tiene el imperativo moral de nombrar las verdaderas raíces de esta crisis –conectar los puntos entre la contaminación climática, el racismo sistémico, los reducidos fondos de los servicios sociales y los excesivos fondos para la policía. También necesitamos aprovechar el momento para proponer soluciones intersectoriales, que dramáticamente reduzcan las emisiones mientras batallamos contra toda forma de desigualdad e injusticia (algo que hemos intentado plantear en The Leap  y que grupos como la Alianza por la Justicia Climática han impulsado durante mucho tiempo).

Y tiene que ocurrir ahora mismo –justo cuando los enormes costos humanos y económicos de la inacción están en plena luz pública. Si fracasamos, si dudamos debido a una errónea idea de lo que es apropiado durante una crisis, dejamos la puerta abierta a que despiadados actores exploten este desastre para obtener predecibles y perversos fines.

También es una dura verdad que la ventana para tener estos debates es cada vez más estrecha. No tendremos ningún tipo de debate de política pública después de que pase esta emergencia; los medios regresarán a cubrir obsesivamente los tuits de Trump y otras intrigas palaciegas. Así que, si bien parecería ser indecente estar hablando acerca de las causas primordiales mientras la gente aún está atrapada en sus hogares, este es, siendo realistas, el único momento en que tenemos la atención de los medios como para tratar el tema del cambio climático. Vale la pena recordar que la decisión de Trump de retirarse del acuerdo climático de París –acción que va a repercutir a escala global durante décadas– recibió más o menos dos días de cobertura decente. Luego regresaron a hablar de Rusia las 24 horas.

Hace poco más de un año Fort McMurray, pueblo en el corazón del auge de petróleo de arenas bituminosas en Alberta, casi quedó reducido a cenizas. Durante un tiempo el mundo estuvo pasmado por las imágenes de los vehículos que iban en fila, sobre una carretera, con las llamas acercándose por ambos lados. En aquel momento nos dijeron que era insensible y sólo se buscaban chivos expiatorios si se hablaba acerca de cómo el cambio climático exacerbaba fuegos incontrolables como este. Era todavía más tabú hacer cualquier conexión entre nuestro mundo, cada vez más caliente, y la industria que da energía a Fort McMurray, que daba empleo a la mayoría de los desalojados y que produce una forma de petróleo particularmente alta en carbono. El momento no era el adecuado; era el de mostrar compasión, brindar apoyo y no hacer preguntas difíciles.

Pero, claro, ya para cuando era apropiado plantear esos asuntos los reflectores de los medios hace mucho que se habían ido. Y hoy, mientras Alberta intenta conseguir al menos tres nuevos oleoductos para cubrir sus planes de incrementar la producción a partir de bituminosas, ese terrible incendio y las lecciones que podría haber aportado casi no se mencionan.

En ello hay una lección para Houston. La ventana para proveer un contexto significativo y sacar conclusiones importantes es reducida. No podemos arriesgarnos a echarla a perder.

Hablar con honestidad acerca de qué fomenta esta época de desastres seriales –incluso mientras ocurren– no falta al respeto a la gente que está en el sitio en cuestión. De hecho, es la única manera de rendir tributo de verdad a sus pérdidas, y nuestra última esperanza para prevenir un futuro con incontables más víctimas.
