The aim is to raise awareness and denounce to society the relationship of these financial practices with human tragedies result of international conflicts.
2710 million euros in nuclear companies
The nuclear weapons remain the most destructive that have been created, designed to annihilate entire populations and territories. Although last July approved the UN treaty prohibiting signatory nations develop, test, transfer, hold, export, use or threat of nuclear weapons, none of the 9 countries that have nuclear weapons now (United States, Russia, Britain, China, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel) supported him .
As indicated Carla Liebana, a member of the campaign, in his speech: " From 2014 to 2017 the BBVA has invested 2710 millons euros in the following seven companies that design, maintain or modernize nuclear weapons: Aecom, Airbus, Boeing, BWX Technologies , General Dynamics, Hoenywell International and Jacobs Engineering " .
According to the latest research by PAX, Do not Bank on the Bomb 2018, highlights its investment in AECOM (298,592,158.36 euros 290,515,625.33 euros in loans and bonds and notes), part of group of companies runs laboratories testing of nuclear weapons in the US and has an essential role in the modernization of the nuclear weapons arsenal of this country . Another example is Boeing, who BBVA has financed 614,909,441.65 135,452,281.55 euros in loans and euros in bonds and notes. Boeing is the company that maintains the operational Minuteman III ,intercontinental nuclear missiles from the United States, and produces different elements of the new B61-12, the main thermonuclear bomb in the arsenal of the United States (intended to be deployed in Europe).
Indra, Airbus Group or Leonardo, three key examples
As said Maria de Lluc Bagur, activist campanya, in his speech : " 2011 to 2017 the BBVA has financed 2,996 million euros to companies that manufacture missiles, explosives, light weapons , bullets, military helicopters, fighter aircraft, military electronics and nuclear weapons, among others " . It is companies such as Indra, Airbus or Leonardo, who export weapons in the Middle East and North Africa and help escalate the violence of armed conflict in these territories ,increasing insecurity of people living and causing it to be forced into exile and seek refuge in other countries. In recent years, the number of forced displacement has increased significantly and 60 million displaced people are currently recognized. On the other hand, the military and European security industry benefits from this tragedy: after supplying weapons in countries in conflict, selling safety equipment and border control to prevent the entry of people fleeing war to own countries and seek asylum in EU territories. This is particularly the case of Indra, the Spanish military technology company who BBVA has allocated 5,906,196.00 euros of investment funds from 2011 to 2017.
In the same period, BBVA has funded 105,962,359.64 euros in loans to Airbus Group (company dedicated to the manufacture of circuits Tridente, fighter jets, aircraft, helicopters and military missile missiles) and has delivered good and promissory notes the company amounting to 215,773,650.81 euros. Leonardo (ex Finmeccanica) Group , is another example: the bank has allocated EUR 155,271.55 14,723,203.77 euros in loans and bonds and commercial paper company manufacturing of combat aircraft missile system (including nuclear), naval artillery and vehicles of an intercontinental ballistic missile , among others.
Over the coming weeks, the campaign will also participate in the boards of Banco Santander, CaixaBank, Bankia and Banco Sabadell thanks to the votes that shareholders across the state have delegated to denounce bad practices of these companies .
