What Benjamin Netanyahu Tried to Negotiate With President Putin in Sochi

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to Russia's resort of Sochi for a three-hour conversation with President Putin. Some experts suggested that they talked about Syria and Iran, however renowned geopolitical expert and author William Engdahl explained to Sputnik Radio what was actually on the agenda.

The meeting was Benjamin Netanyahu’s fourth visit to Russia over the past sixteen months.

"In my view, the meeting between the Israeli Prime Minister and Vladimir Putin is a vain attempt by Netanyahu to create a de-facto recognition of the illegal Israeli (and it is illegal by the UN mandates and international law) occupation of the Golan Heights by Israeli Defense Forces," William Engdahl told Sputnik.

There is a deeper issue, he went on. It is that the Israeli daughter company of New Jersey oil company Genie Energy two and a half years ago discovered what they believe is a vast deep reservoir of crude oil in the Golan Heights. If we watch very closely the Israeli activities in the Golan Heights since that time, Netanyahu pleaded with Barack Obama, when he was president, to recognize the Israeli illegal occupation of the Golan Heights as a de-facto reality in the midst of the war, he said.

Commenting on the Russia-Israeli dialogue on Syria, the geopolitical expert said that on the part of Russia, it is simply a pragmatic dialogue aimed at preventing any armed clashes and beyond this he sees little deepness in the cooperation between Netanyahu government and Russia.

La frase se atribuye a un tendero pero se la podría apropiar cualquier banquero tradicional, a tenor del ejército de rivales que están socavando el negocio financiero y que, mucho nos tememos, convertirá a los grandes bancos en los trilobites del siglo XXI. Nadie -salvo, quizá, los atracadores- los va a echar de menos.

“Estimamos que la banca puede perder 11.000 millones de sus beneficios [de 150.000 millones] en los próximos cinco años”. Quien pronostica esto no es precisamente un antisistema sino la mismísima Goldman Sachs. 

Tampoco es sospechoso de bolcheviquismo Bill Gates, para quien “necesitamos servicios bancarios, pero no bancos”.

Lo cual no significa que los bancos vayan a desaparecer de la noche a la mañana: “En estos momentos y centrados en España veo complicado lo de vivir absolutamente aislado de los bancos. 

Está claro que necesitaremos servicios bancarios (transferencias, inversiones, crédito, ahorro, etc.) pero esos servicios no tienen porqué venir de un banco al estilo tradicional”, me explica por correo electrónico Albert Cañigueral, fundador de Consumo Colaborativoy “garganta profunda” en la elaboración de este artículo.

Como ya sucedió con la industria musical, la cinematográfica, la editorial y mediática, internet está dinamitando las bases del negocio bancario, aunque el proceso será mucho más lento porque no es lo mismo dejar de comprar el periódico o escuchar música en la radio online que “cortar” con tu banco de siempre. 

En el futuro usaremos algo más parecido a una “mezcla de dinero tradicional, criptomonedas digitales globales, monedas alternativas locales y puntos de las líneas aéreas o el súper (que en el fondo son dinero también). 

En este escenario será cuando los servicios bancarios prestados por entidades no tradicionales florezcan de verdad”, señala Cañigueral.

Préstamos entre particulares

Así están las cosas: El tipo de interés del BCE está en mínimos históricos, cerca del 0%. 

Sin embargo, la banca española estrangula aplica a los créditos al consumo un tipo superior al 10%, el doble de la media europea. ¿Conclusión? Alguien se está forrando.

En toda economía hay ahorradores y gente dispuesta a endeudarse. 

En los tiempos analógicos los bancos se encargaban de intermediar entre unos y otros, pero crecientemente internet está usurpando este rol gracias al llamado “crowdlending”.

El crowdfunding es, con diferencia, el servicio financiero de particular a particular más conocido. Su equivalente en la banca convencional sería un crédito a empresa. 

Precisamente, las empresas se quejan de que la banca prácticamente haya cerrado el grifo del crédito en España, dejando en agua de borrajas en el mejor de los casos y en un mercadeo inmoral, en el peor, la bajada de tipos del BCE.

En 2025 el mercado de crowdfunding alcanzará los 90.000 millones de dólares, casi el doble que la industria actual de capital-riesgo, según un estudio del Banco Mundial. 

En España, el crowdfunding supone más de la mitad (35 millones de euros) del total que movió la economía colaborativa (62 millones) en 2014, una cifra aún anémica (1,3 euros por cabeza) comparada con las cifras que maneja el sector financiero.

Así están las cosas: Los españoles tenemos guardados en el banco 740.000 millones de euros, a razón de 46.000 euros por familia (con las distorsiones propias de las medias aritméticas).

Ahorro y crédito en grupo

Así están las cosas: La dependencia del español para con su banco no es extrapolable en buena parte del mundo. 

Por ejemplo, en México es más común ahorrar con las llamadas “tandas”, grupos de amigos que ingresan un “fondo común” al que recurren los miembros del colectivo cuando lo necesitan, que mediante los bancos.

Y así están cambiando: El ejemplo de México sirvió de inspiración al chileno Felipe Parragué para fundar Tutanda.com, según cuenta Consumo Colaborativo. 

La plataforma, que funciona en España EEUU y América Latina, se basa en la aportación periódica de un monto semanal de dinero, “el cual será repartido entre los participantes según la periodicidad que se haya asignado. 

Con esto, cada participante recibirá el fondo en algún momento, convirtiéndose en un crédito para los que reciben primero y un ahorro para los que la adquieren al final”. 

Una filosofía similar rige los designios de Puddle, plataforma de ahorro inspirada en los llamados “bankomunales” de Guatemala y Venezuela.

Medios de pago

Así están las cosas: “Internet está cambiando nuestra relación con el dinero del mismo modo en que alteró profundamente las industrias de la música y la prensa escrita”, se puede leer en un informe de Kantox sobre las “fintech”, las empresas financieras tecnológicas. El dinero es una ficción incorpórea, una ilusión compartida, así que ¿para qué necesitamos billetes (y bancos para guardarlos)?

The U.S. repeatedly presents itself as the world's "moral leader", implying that without our leadership, chaos and immorality would reign across the globe. Most Americans believe that we are the only nation capable of assuring that morality and human rights prevail throughout the world. This was recently displayed by the "moral outrage" expressed by the U.S. over Syrian use of chemical weapons.
How quickly we (conveniently) forget . . .

Napalm:

"U.S. troops used napalm from about 1965 to 1972 in the Vietnam War. Napalm is a mixture of plastic polystyrene, hydrocarbon benzene, and gasoline. This mixture creates a jelly-like substance that, when ignited, sticks to practically anything and burns up to ten minutes. The effects of napalm on the human body are unbearably painful and almost always cause death among its victims. "Napalm is the most terrible pain you can ever imagine" said Kim Phúc, a survivor from a napalm bombing. "Water boils at 212°F. Napalm generates temperatures 1,500°F to 2,200°F." Kim Phúc sustained third degree burns to portions of her body. She was one of the only survivors of such extreme measures.

Napalm was first used in flamethrowers for U.S. ground troops; they burned down sections of forest and bushes in hopes of eliminating any enemy guerrilla fighters. Later on in the war B-52 Bombers began dropping napalm bombs and other incendiary explosives. Air raids that used napalm were much more devastating than flamethrowers; a single bomb was capable of destroying areas up to 2,500 square yards. Throughout the duration of the war, 1965 – 1973, eight million tons of bombs were dropped over Vietnam; this was more than three times the amount used in WWII."

Tactically, it slowed the North Korean invasion and it protected the flanks of US marines during the Inchon amphibious landing. It was "the most outstanding single weapon employed in the Korean operations," according to one Pentagon staffer. The implication is that without napalm, the North and their Chinese allies would have conquered South Korea. Incendiary bombing raids also devastated Korea’s cities. After repeated bombing Pyongyang, a city with a pre-war population of 500,000, was said to have only two buildings left standing.

America dropped 32,357 tons of napalm on Korea, twice as much as it dropped on Japan in 1945. But Vietnam took the heaviest hit: 388,000 tons of napalm between 1963 and 1973."

I was, unfortunately, unable to determine how many people died from the use of napalm in Vietnam. Agent Orange:


Agent Orange is a toxic chemical herbicide that was used from about 1965 – 1970 in the Vietnam War. It was one of the main mixtures used during Operation Ranch Hand. Operation Ranch Hand was intended to deprive Vietnamese farmers and guerilla fighters of clean food and water in hopes they would relocate to areas more heavily controlled by the U.S. By the end of the operation over twenty million gallons of herbicides and defoliants were sprayed over forests and fields.


Agent Orange is fifty times more concentrated than normal agricultural herbicides; this extreme intensity completely destroyed all plants in the area. Agent Orange not only had devastating effects on agriculture but also on people and animals. The Vietnam Red Cross recorded over 4.8 million deaths and 400,000 children born with birth defects due to exposure to Agent Orange.
