When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for a people to dissolve the political bonds which have bound it to another and to take among the nations of the earth the separate and equal position to which the laws of nature and the God of that nature they give him a right, a just respect for the judgment of humanity demands that he declare the causes that impel him to separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that men are created equal; who are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness;

And continues with:


that to guarantee these rights governments are instituted among men, who derive their legitimate powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever a form of government becomes destructive of these principles, the people have the right to reform or abolish it and to institute a new government based on these principles, and to organize their powers in the way that, in their judgment, chances of achieving their safety and happiness. Prudence, of course, will advise that governments of old established should not be changed for light and transient reasons; and, indeed, all experience has shown that mankind is more disposed to suffer, as long as evils are tolerable, than to do justice by abolishing the forms to which it is accustomed. But when a long series of abuses and usurpations, invariably aimed at the same objective, evidences the intention of subjecting the people to absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to overthrow that government and to provide new safeguards for their future security and happiness.
