MEXICAN GOVERNMENT SPIES AND ACTIVISTS JOURNALISTS ANTI-CORRUPTION WITH SOFTWARE PURCHASED FROM ISRAEL




The Mexican government spied on journalists and civil society activists through a 'malware' highly sophisticated that provides access to all content and functions of the infected cell.
This is Pegasus, a malicious software developed by the Israeli firm NSO Group 1 and only sold to governments.
At least three units in Mexico have acquired the 'malware': the Attorney General's Office (PGR), the Center for Investigation and National Security (CISEN) and the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), the latter organization not It has legal authority to exercise surveillance actions.
Attempts to infection detected by organizations occurred between January 2015 and July 2016 against prominent journalists and human rights activists in Mexico, by the federal government.
Among those affected would be the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez, Aristegui News, or Carlos Loret de Mola, a reporter for radio, television and print columnist Center.
Two other Mexican journalists against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) received messages to infect their phones in 2016, coinciding with the birth of the project and the publication of several investigations of corruption by the former governor of Veracruz.
Finally, two researchers from the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) were also spied upon while working for legal reform corruption.
The organizations claim that the findings of this research point to the commission of serious crimes and human rights violations.
