Researchers analyzed federal statistics from 2006 to 2014 and concluded that 3.4 percent of the US population, more than 8.3 million people, suffer from severe psychological disorders. 

More than 8.3 million Americans suffer from severe psychological disorders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defined as feelings of sadness, restlessness and irritability that can affect physical wellbeing, according to a study published Monday also reveals the inability of the US Government to meet the growing demand for mental health care.

" We estimate that millions of Americans have levels of emotional distress that reduce their quality of life and shorten their hope , " said Dr. Judith Weissman, researcher at the Langone Medical Center at New York University and lead author of the study, who said the research "could help explain why the suicide rate is increasing, reaching 43,000" cases per year. 

In turn, the study published ensures that access to mental health services for people suffering from emotional distress has been reduced considerably due to a shortage of professionals, increased costs that are not covered by health insurance and the effects of the economic crisis of 2008.
