Con toda seguridad, las personas de bien preocupadas por una alimentación humana saludable y una agricultura ecológica, la única sostenible en el tiempo, habrá leído con satisfacción la noticia (http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=216292) sobre la iniciativa ciudadana destinada a crear un Tribunal Monsanto y a convocar a una Asamblea Popular paralela que se realizarán en la ciudad holandesa de La Haya el próximo octubre.

En su página web, Monsanto se presenta como una empresa cuyos objetivos son:
“Producir más, conservar más y mejorar la calidad de vida. De eso se trata la agricultura sustentable y esa es la esencia de Monsanto. Monsanto no podría existir sin los agricultores. Miles de millones de personas dependen de lo que hacen los agricultores. Y miles de millones más lo harán en el futuro. En las próximas décadas, los agricultores deberán cultivar la misma cantidad de alimentos que en los últimos 10.000 años juntos. Nuestro propósito es trabajar junto con los agricultores para poder lograrlo. Y lo hacemos vendiendo semillas, eventos biotecnológicos y productos para la protección de cultivos. El desafío: satisfacer las necesidades actuales y preservar el planeta para el futuro.”

En fin, en apariencia, sus objetivos no podrían ser más beneficiosos para la humanidad. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, es una empresa que en mayo de este año estaba en el puesto 420 de la lista Forbes 2000 –clasificaciones de las mayores empresas y fortunas personales del mundo–, publicada por la revista homónima y le asignaba un valor de mercado de 41.100 millones de dólares, empleando a 22.500 personas. En realidad, Monsanto no es la mayor empresa del sector agroquímico: Basf y Dow Chemicals ocupan el puesto 94 y 111, respectivamente, en la lista de Forbes; mientras tanto, Syngenta está en el puesto 443.

Para saber por qué Monsanto ha saltado a la notoriedad –una vez más– en vinculación ahora con el Tribunal que tendrá lugar el mes que viene en La Haya es necesario conocer la historia de la empresa.

Breve repaso de la historia de Monsanto
La empresa fue fundada en 1901 por John Francis Queeny y su sede central está en Creve Coeur, Saint Louis, Missuori, Estados Unidos. Produce herbicidas y pesticidas sintéticos, y semillas genéticamente modificadas para resistir a sus propios herbicidas.

Al principio, Monsanto producía aditivos alimentarios como la sacarina y la vainillina; en los años veinte del pasado siglo producía numerosos productos químicos industriales como ácido sulfúrico y PCB, y en los cuarenta se había convertido en un importante productor de plásticos, incluyendo poliestireno y fibras sintéticas. Monsanto consiguió logros notables en el campo de la industria química, y sus científicos estaban a la vanguardia de la investigación en hidrogenación asimétrica catalítica; la compañía fue la primera en producir diodos emisores de luz (LED). La compañía también fabricó productos polémicos como el insecticida DDT, los PCB y la somatotropina bovina recombinada

En los sesenta del siglo XX, un conjunto de empresas químicas formado por Monsanto, Dow Chemicals, Uniroyal, Hercules, Diamond Shamrock, Thompson chemical y TH fue contratado por el gobierno de Estados Unidos para producir un herbicida llamado ‘agente naranja’ que después sería utilizado en la guerra de Vietnam con el fin de destruir la selva vietnamita y las cosechas privando a los vietnamitas de alimento y al Vietcong de vegetación donde esconderse. Este defoliante era un potente veneno químico que causó unos 400.000 muertos y el nacimiento de unos 500.000 niños con malformaciones fetales entre la población vietnamita, además de las bajas en el propio ejército de EEUU. El gobierno estadounidense ha tratado de evadir su responsabilidad descargándola en las empresas contratadas para producir el agente. El problema consistió en que la prisa de estas empresas por producir el herbicida y la preocupación de hacerlo con unos costes mínimos hicieron que el producto final contuviera grandes cantidades de tetraclorodibenzodioxina, una dioxina de alto poder cancerígeno que además provoca malformaciones en los fetos. Esta circunstancia, unida a la gran capacidad del agente naranja de permanecer activo –sin degradarse– en el suelo ha provocado graves daños en la selva de aquel país, así como generaciones de niños con malformaciones y problemas de cáncer al colon.

Aun así, EEUU no ganó su guerra y tuvo que retirarse vergonzosamente de Saigón –su último bastión– el 30 de abril de 1975.

Monsanto fue pionera en la modificación genética de células vegetales, y una de las cuatro empresas que anunciaron la introducción de genes en plantas en 1983; también fue una de los primeras en realizar, en 1987, ensayos de campo de cultivos modificados genéticamente.

La compañía fue una de las primeras en aplicar modelos de negocio de la industria biotecnológica a la agricultura y en introducir el uso de técnicas desarrolladas por la empresa Genentech y otras farmacéuticas y biotecnológicas a finales de los setenta del pasado siglo en California. En este modelo de negocio, las empresas invierten mucho en investigación y desarrollo, para después amortizar los gastos y generar beneficios gracias a la utilización y aplicación de las “patentes biológicas” derivadas de la investigación.

 La apuesta de Monsanto por este nuevo modelo de desarrollo agrícola, junto con su ambición de crear un sistema global y uniforme que le asegurara sus derechos de mejora vegetal desde los ochenta le han creado numerosos conflictos con agricultores, cuya práctica desde el comienzo histórico de la agricultura había sido siempre guardar, reutilizar, compartir y mejorar las semillas. El hecho de patentar semillas es visto como una amenaza a la biodiversidad y un acto de biopiratería. También se han criticado los posibles y graves perjuicios a la salud y el negativo impacto ambiental de sus productos, algunos de los cuales han sido prohibidos en Europa y otros países. El papel de Monsanto en los cambios agrícolas, los productos biotecnológicos y los grupos de presión formados en las agencias gubernamentales —con casos de sobornos— para evitar más controles y su historia en la industria química han hecho que la corporación sea muy cuestionada.

Los ciudadanos europeos están próximos a ser cocinado sin ser justamente gallinas. Diríamos que están en la olla hirviendo ante las ambiciones y el agiotismo económico de las transnacionales. Ese Tratado de Comercio e Inversiones entre la Unión Europea y los Estados Unidos no es más que un simulado golpe de estado económico contra el derecho a la vida de los pueblos. Y el tema es vital porque afecta no solo a los europeos directamente sino a todo el mundo. Es una estrategia de las corporaciones para aumentar sus ya abultadas ganancias. La excusa conlleva a afectar las legislaciones de cada país involucrado.

Situación a la que no se escapan los suscritores, por cuanto, de ¿qué otra manera se van armonizar esas relaciones legales para ajustar sus intereses? Esto evidencia a leguas que es un tratado más político que económico. Innegable, dada la vinculación existente entre los personajes que ejercen el poder, practican la economía y están sujetos a los mandatos de las corporaciones. La conspiración se denota cuando están negociando tras las puertas, a escondidas y en forma muy restringida. Aunque la apariencia refleje que nosotros nos hallamos lejanos de Europa, no es cierta tal afirmación dada la vinculación global existente.
En primer lugar una de las garantías en pico de zamuro es la referente a la soberanía alimentaria. Por cuanto los procesos de importación y exportación van a ser afectados. Agreguemos el peligro de mengua en los derechos sociales y laborales, el medio ambiente y demás ramificaciones de la vida económica mundial. Ya lo dijo en cierta oportunidad el comandante Chávez, que cualquier ruido en Europa se oye en Venezuela porque no estamos ausentes, formamos parte del sistema integral humanitario. Todo lo que las corporaciones secuestran hace temblar las buenas relaciones comerciales de las naciones con recursos menores porque afecta el verdadero espíritu democrático de sus pueblos.

Dentro de las exigencias del tratado, se asoma la posibilidad de un sistema arbitral que deja en manos de abogados privados el arreglo de las controversias. Recordemos el caso de Egipto que al tratar de aumentar el salario mínimo fue atacado por las corporaciones que alegaban supuesta disminución de su ingresos. Tuvo que recular el gobierno por las presuntas demandas corporativas. Esa decisión afincó el poder hegemónico de las corporaciones poderosas y estableció, en forma contundente, un sistema moderno de esclavitud para el trabajador. Ese tratado puede suscitar una tranca para los reclamos ambientales.

Como la ambición es el objetivo principal de esos empresarios, cualquiera puede continuar quebrando la tierra con la práctica del Fracking u otro medio de explotación contra la naturaleza. La salud y la educación son otros servicios atacados al privatizarse. Las pensiones y demás beneficios sociales se tratan de regular mediante los llamados fondos de inversión privada. Los países más desarrollados en tecnología devorarán mediante la adaptación de barreras arancelarias, y políticas de subsidio desiguales a sus víctimas. El presunto aumento de la productividad en beneficio de los intereses particulares, el consumo de alimentos “hormonicos” acrecentará los problemas de salud y en consecuencia, una recurrencia al negocio de los laboratorios.

Además de violar los derechos a la vida de sus pueblos, también se soslayan tratados ambientales como el acuerdo de Paris. Es otra forma de acabar con la civilización. A pesar de encontrarse las naciones ya amenazadas por tratados agiotistas como el CETA y el NAFTA, esta otra manera de negociados corporativos somete y subyuga a la especie humana. Y repito, esas decisiones nos afectan por lo que debemos protegernos a través de los proyectos humanistas que, el proceso revolucionario en Venezuela estudia y aplica. Tomar con indiferencia esa alevosa arremetida de las transnacionales corporativas es vivir ciego ante la proximidad del desastre. Ya apreciamos como los países neoliberales suramericanos, entre los que se cuentan Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay están arrimando sus brazos para cobijarse en esos tratados sin importarles la disminución de la vida económica de sus connacionales. El primer paso es destruir la unión suramericana que Chávez propuso con Mercosur. Los pueblos cuentan para evitarlo. Esperemos los acontecimientos con los ojos abiertos para salvaguardar los beneficios que el proceso revolucionario venezolano ha logrado con la voluntad de sus actuales gobernantes. Venceremos.
