Left-wing Catalan intellectuals and artists sign a manifesto against participation in 1-O

Nearly a thousand intellectuals and artists who have qualified as "leftists" have signed a manifesto against participation in the October 1 referendum, calling it an "anti-democratic scam" and a "cheating" call opposed to the "free-choice town of Catalonia ".
The manifesto, published today by the newspaper El País, calls for non-participation of Catalan citizens in the consultation, regardless of their position before independence.
"We reject October 1 as an undemocratic trap, and we call not to participate in this call, which is the opposite of an exercise of free decision of the people of Catalonia," say the signatories of the manifesto.
Among them, the writer Juan Marsé, the filmmaker Isabel Coixet, the actress Rosa Maria Sardá and the designer Javier Mariscal, all Catalans.
Javier Cercas, Javier Marías, Juan José Millás, Rosa Montero, Manuel Rico and Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, the directors Fernando Colomo and José Luis Guerín, the singer Miguel Ríos and the actress Marisa Paredes, among others, also support the statement.

In the nearly thousand signers, who are defined as "leftist people" who reject the policies of the government of Mariano Rajoy, include the former secretary general of the PCE Francisco Frutos and the lawyer Cristina Almeida. "Any democrat, regardless of their position in the face of independence, should reject this call, unfit for democracy and cheating ... Do not participate, do not vote!"
The text, promoted by the association Recortes Cero and published in Spanish and Catalan, notes that the call for 1-O is not transparent nor does it establish a minimum of participation. In addition, he defends that the opposition has been "marginalized" in its implementation and that the approval of the referendum law and the laws of disconnection has been "express".
